Krull
An Unnecessary Movie Analysis

Krull 1983 (DVD)
~ Ken Marshall, Liam Neeson, Lysette Anthony, Freddie Jones, Francesca Annis

Quick Review: A prince needs a razor tipped boomerang to free his beloved from the fortress of the Beast.

Let's analyze that Quick Review above, "A prince needs a razor tipped boomerang to free his beloved from the fortress of the Beast." Oh yeah! Gather up your old Dungeons & Dragons friends, this movie is a preteen fantasy and magical wet-dream straight out of 1983. With spectacular special effects, Liam Neeson and a razor tipped boomerang (video), this movie will easily be the pride of your secret fantasy DVD collection!

Janet Jackson sure loves this movie. She liked the boomerang's design so much that she modeled her infamous 2004 Superbowl nipple ring after it.

Krull features dozens of early 80's state-of-the-art special effects including the dissolve, claymation and even video projection. The special effects crew for this movie truly mastered the classic dissolve. Actors just seem to walk through walls (video). Another dazzling effect is the claymation. Not since the TV show Gumby has anyone really pulled this off. It looks extra cool when the actors fight this clay monster when it is projected on a big movie screen. It's almost like the crazy homeless man I saw in a Times Square movie theater while seeing Gladiator. The homeless guy would throw trash at the screen in a desperate attempt to fight Russell Crowe (video).

Many people don't realize that this movie paved the way for the Australia popularity boom. The introduction of the razor tipped weapon in this movie heightened the knowledge of the Native Australian people and their culture. Australian Natives invented the boomerang centuries ago because they had nothing better to do. Interest in the boomerang after Krull was released led to a nasty aftermath during the 1980's. The movie Krull can be blamed for the following: Crocodile Dundee, INXS, Fosters, Nerf Boomerangs, Outback Steak House, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, that 'dingo ate my baby' movie, Midnight Oil, Nicole Kidman, The Crocodile Hunter and the phrases like "G'day mate" and "Throw another shrimp on the barbie." Yes indeed, Krull had a sad, sad aftermath on world culture.

Just seeing Liam Neeson, in the beginning of his career, and then realizing that he's one of the major stars of the Star Wars prequels, will make you wet your bed all over again!

There's so many reasons that make this movie significantly relevant. It's catalyst of Australian popularity and special effects are just a few reasons that this movie is so spectacular. But most of all, if you own a shinny silver boomerang with embedded gem stones, then this movie is for you!

2 StarsThere's something inescapably appealing about this camp 1983 Star Wars-meets-The Lord of the Rings knockoff that encourages the viewer to overlook its many silly shortcomings and simply enjoy the fun. James Horner's rollicking music score certainly helps, as does the epic-scale CinemaScope photography of the breathtaking Italian landscapes. The costumes and extravagant production design are also great to look at, and much of Derek Meddings's visual effects work still looks striking. If you feel the need for some escapist sword-and-sorcery fantasy, then Krull delivers in full measure.
